Who Are Boys Night Out?
Boys Night Out are a post-hardcore pop punk band from Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The band have gone through a number of changes over the years, both in the style they play in and the members, but through each incarnation the band has never manage to disappoint fans and have produced some of the sickest music ever. Boys Night Out initially came together in 1998 as a screamo/post-hardcore group when lead vocalist Connor Lovat-Fraser and current guitarist Jeff Davis began collaborating on songs, their work eventually led to a four-song demo known as You Are My Canvas. The release was followed by a signing to One Day Savior Records and the release of their debut EP, Broken Bones & Bloody Kisses. Both EP’s were notable for their lyrical content, raw energy and morbid and macabre themes, making Boys Night Out a name to remember.
Interest in the band was immediate and a short while later they signed to New Jersey based Ferret Records. Their debut full-length, 2003’s Make Yourself Sick, was to the shock of some fans much lighter and punk-pop-oriented, but with the same heavy screaming and guitars found on earlier releases. The band’s next effort came in the form of 2005’s Trainwreck. This release was a somewhat more subdued, experimental concept record based on a man’s loss of sanity. The album chronicles the arrest, trial, treatment and subsequent release of a man who, in a waking dream, murders his wife and then cuts both his hands off with a machine at his work so that he can not kill again. It was in this same album where the boys made a brave move by introducing Kara Dupuy, who brought with her not only a fresh, new synth to their sound but female vocals as well, however all good things have to end and after only a short stint with the band they parted ways as she had recently become engaged and chose to pursue a new life off the road. The band then released their third album; self titled Boys Night Out, on June 26, 2007, and are now on hiatus. Its unsure if they will reform and make a new album, but I hope they do.
Where Are They Now?
Boys Night Out as a whole are on a hiatus and its unlikely they'll reform to be honest. Since leaving the band in 2006 former drummer Brain Southall has joined the band The Receiving End Of Sirens, and Kara Dupuy is enjoying married life.
Recommended for fans of Thursday, The Receiving End Of Sirens, Moneen, maybe Bayside.

The Albums

You Are My Canvas (Independent, 2001)
The first ever release by the band, and it was a promising effort. I heard this EP kind of late in the bands cycle, and while it’s a great album it’s not much to re-listen to, especially considering every track has been re-made and featured on another album later on. There are little differences but nothing drastic, except for “The Anatomy Of The Journey”, but that’s only because of the guitar distortion and a little riff. Great stuff, but nothing notable over the other stuff really. Check it out if you liked the other stuff more and just wanna hear how they’ve progressed, that’s about it really.
RANDOM TRIVIA TIME!
- The title of this demo is taken from a lyric in the song "Sketch Artist Composite".

Broken Bones and Bloody Kisses (One Day Savior, 2002)
Released on the 20th of August, 2002, Broken Bones and Bloody Kisses was the debut EP following up from their demo released a year earlier. The band had definitely matured in the time between each recording, and this both EP’s became notable for their morbid and macabre lyrics and themes. There’s only one word to describe this EP. Raw. I’m pretty sure this is the type of EP that only heart broken young men with a passion for angry, loud music can come up with. Brutally honest and down trodden, this is where Boys Night Out began to shine and make a name for themselves.

Make Yourself Sick (Ferret Records, 2004)
Released on the 23rd of September, 2004, Make Yourself Sick was the first full-length album from Boys Night Out and their first real debut and with their unique brand of pop punk laced with screaming vocals and the occasional breakdown, Make Yourself Sick is a masterpiece of a debut album. Sticking with what they know works, Make Yourself Sick still features a lot of the same morbid and macabre lyrics and themes heard from the Broken Bones And Bloody Kisses EP, but they manage to incorporate elements of pop punk, hardcore and screamo which just works for them, giving them their own distinct sound.
This was the album that first got me into Boys Night Out and it’s still probably my favourite album by them. I first heard “The First Time Shouldn’t Taste Like Blood” after a friend sent it to me over MSN one day and we both thought they were beyond sick and scoured the internet looking for more. You have to remember that this was around the time when “emo” was the big thing, and bands like The Starting Line, Coheed And Cambria, Senses Fail and Motion City Soundtrack were just getting big. Great bands, but nothing like what BNO had going for themselves, so it was a great time to like this sort of music.
RANDOM TRIVIA TIME!
Much like most emo bands at the time, BNO were no strangers to exceedingly long track titles and obscure references. Here are some!
- The first track of the album, "I Got Punched In The Nose For Sticking My Face In Other People's Business", is taken from a quote in the film The Wedding Singer.
- The title "The First Time It Shouldn't Taste Like Blood" is taken from a quote in the film Darkness Falls.
- The title "It's Dylan, You Know the Drill" is taken from the show Beverly Hills 90210. It was the message on Dylan's answering machine.
- The title "Hold On Tightly, Let Go Lightly" is a direct quote from the film Croupier.

Trainwreck (Ferret Records, 2005)
Released on the 26th of July, 2005, Trainwreck is the second full-length album from Boys Night Out, and holy crap what an album. It’s a tightly-knit concept album that follows the loss of sanity of one man following the murder of his wife he committed in his sleep. Sound interesting to you? Check it out. I promise you will like it. If you wanna know how it goes without listening to it, click the link I guess :( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trainwreck_(album)#The_Story_of_Trainwreck
So yeah this album is awesome. I remember not liking it at first listen because of how different it was from Make Yourself Sick, but it slowly grew on me once I started listening to it properly and has become one of my favourite albums. The concept behind it is something you’d come to expect from a band like BNO by now because its to do with killing people, right? Well its not all about that anymore. This is where BNO began to really mature and change, with a lot less screaming and unwarrented murder (well sorta), the band begin to focus more on their lyrical content and story telling, and that’s the high point of this album in my opinion. I can’t really explain much else other than that, check it out if you can and judge for yourself. This album was also the biggest turning point for most BNO fans, as there’s a on going argument over whether the band “sold out” or not from this album on because of the distinct change in style. Those fans are idiots. :)

Fifty Million People Can't Be Wrong (Ferret Records, 2007)
A Digital-only EP released back on the 6th of February 2007, Fifty Million People Cant Be Wrong was a reminder to us fans that Boys Night Out hadn’t forgot their roots and still knew how to churn out song after song chock full of awesome riffs and catchy melodies, however the change in their song writing was noticeable as it was with Trainwreck, as the band had begun to move in new direction. Further focusing on the use of more melodic vocals than the screaming they’ve been associated with but never straying away from the usual themes of drinking, suffering, and despair, the band had yet again reinvented themselves and offered us a promising glimpse of what to expect in the future.
The EP features five tracks; three re-recorded versions of songs taken from the Broken Bones And Bloody Kisses EP, and two new songs from their upcoming 3rd full length album, self titled Boys Night Out.
I remember when this first came out; I was obsessed with Trainwreck at the time and I don’t think I listened to much else for the next few months, so I was really excited to see new a Boys Night Out release, although I was expecting a big disappointment, but boy was I wrong. I’m not gonna lie, the EP was totally worth the wait for the re-recorded version of The Only Honest Love Song alone, because it is just THAT good. The clean vocals worked a lot better in some of the re-recorded songs, if only because some people can’t work out what’s being said in them, which is a shame because they’re really awesome lyrics, and the new tracks had everything a new Boys Night Out sampler should have, catchy lyrics, great riffs and clapping! Its short, it’s sweet, and great to hear a different take on classics.

Dude, You Need to Stop Dancing (Ferret Records, 2006)
Released on the 27th of June, 2006, Dude, You Need to Stop Dancing is a DVD release showcasing various multimedia, a “mockumentary” about the band breaking up and a live show filmed on March 10, 2006 at the Opera House in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dude, You Need to Stop Dancing features a fictional story about the band growing tired of one another while on tour. Tensions build, and eventually the band decides to call it quits. Most of the mockumentary focuses on members Connor Lovat-Fraser (lead vocals), Jeff Davis (lead guitar), Brian Southall (drums) and Dave Costa (bass) and how much they dislike each other. Keyboard player and vocalist Kara Dupuy was in the band at the time, but doesn't feature in the mockumentary. Most of the action surrounds the band as they prepare to play their last shows.
Personally this is my least favourite release. I know it’s unfair to say but this really isn’t their best live performance, and I don’t know why they’d bother including it over any other live performance. They didn’t have the same sort of sound they usually do, Connors vocal performance wasn’t that great and if I’m not mistaken they were missing their second guitarist Andy Lewis which is probably why they didn’t sound right. They’re still good, but they could’ve done better.
Notable Tracks
They’re all pretty sick songs, just not get performances.

Boys Night Out (Ferret Records, 2007)
Released on the 26th of June, 2007, the self titled Boys Night Out album is the latest release from the band, and personally it doesn’t quite match up to their previous full length releases. A tad unfair considering Make Yourself Sick and Trainwreck are pretty hard albums to top, its still a pretty ok album but a few of the songs felt like filler, and when you consider 2 of the best songs on the album were on an EP a few months earlier it doesn’t leave much else to look out for. Either way it was a solid effort from an otherwise incredible band, just a shame this was their last.
